Monarchs Prepare For 70th Season

Edinburgh Monarchs have been telling ROCK SPORT RADIO about their upcoming season..
“The 70th season of the Edinburgh Monarchs opens on the 30th of March with the reintroduction of the Scottish Cup and a visit from our nearest and dearest rivals the Glasgow Allied Vehicle Tigers. The Scottish Cup is the most famous of challenge trophies with the Edinburgh-Glasgow derby widely regarded as the fiercest rivalry in British Speedway.
We then move onto the SGB Championship Shield group stages. This is a regionalised competition which sees the Monarchs race home and away against the Berwick Bandits, Workington Comets and Glasgow. There are 3 groups in total and the group winners and best placed runner up all progress to the semi final knockout stage.
Further to the SGB Championship Shield the Monarchs will also take part in the SGB Championship KO Cup; a 2 legged knock out competition that sees the Monarchs drawn once again against Glasgow in the first round.
The bread and butter is of course the league and the Monarchs tilt for a 6th league title in 15 years starts with an away fixture to the Scunthorpe Scorpions as early as the 1st of April, with the first home SGB Championship fixture of the season coming on Friday 4th May against the Peterborough Panthers
The League programme sees us race home and away against the other 10 clubs once each this is a reduction from twice each last year so each fixture takes on even more importance in the hunt for a top 4 finish and a playoff place to decide the league champions.
This year’s SGB Championship will be contested by 11 teams, this is up from 10 last season with Lakeside having stepped up from the National League the full list being ourselves, Berwick, Glasgow, Ipswich, Lakeside, Newcastle, Peterborough, Redcar, Scunthorpe, Sheffield and Workington.”
