Five of the six nations playing in the World Cup on Friday have real connections to Scotland in the World Cup….Egypt beat Scotland 3-1 at Pittodrie  in a friendlyduring a year we qualified for the finals in 1990 while  Uruguay drew 0-0 with us in the 1986 finals in Mexico despite having only 10 men from the second minute when a terrible foul against Gordon Strachan saw a Uruguay player sent off. We needed to win that final group game in Mexico but drew 0-0 with Graeme Sharp of Everton and Steve Nicol of Liverpool missing what could be termed as ” sitters ”

Iran drew with us 1 – 1 in the second game of our infamous Argentina campaign of 1978 while Morocco were the last team to beat Scotland and indeed play us in a World Cup finals at France 1998 when they beat us 3-0.
Spain was where Scotland played their 1982 World Cup finals campaign beating New Zealand, losing to Brazil and drawing with the former Soviet Union.
As for Portugal? Well, we can only dream now of having a player like Ronaldo.

Saturday sees Australia play. Scotland beat them in a play off to qualify for Mexico World Cup 1986 while Peru was the start of our debacle in Argentina 1978 when they beat us 3-1.. Denmark beat us 1-0 in the opening game of our Mexico ’86 campaign  while we have faced Croatia and France in World Cup qualifying.
Argentina were the second best team in the World when we beat them in a friendly at Hampden 1-0 in 1990 with defender Stuart McKimmie the goalscoring hero.
Sadly, these days we can only make historic connections to World Cup finalists so let’s hope Qatar 2022 or Mexico/USA/Canada 2026 will give us back the spirit of France ’98.
Sunday’s matches see old Scottish rivals Costa Rica in action. They beat us 1-0 at the 1990 World Cup.
We have played Brazil four times in World Cup finals in 1974,82,90 and 98. We have drawn one and lost three.

Scotland v West Germany at the 1986 World Cup
The old WEST Germany stopped Scotland qualifying for the 1970 World Cup with decisive 3-2 win in the final qualifying match and they beat us 2-1 in the Mexico 1986 World Cup finals.
Scotland’s first World Cup appearance was in Switzerland 1954 but it was only memorable for a thumping 7-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay when Scotland were given a football lesson by the then World Champions [ 1950 World Cup ] in the first group stage.
